Primal Home: Fiber & Earth Paintings as Wallpaper

"While our experience of the world is formulated by a combination of five senses, much architecture is produced under consideration of only one - sight. The suppression of the other sensory realms has led to an impoverishment of our environment, causing a feeling of detachment and alienation."

-Juhani Pallasmaa, Haptic Vision by Adam Donner

In a world saturated with sleek and fleeting trends, the ephemeral beckons us to revisit the past roots of human experience. This urge to examine and alchemize has allowed the concept of "Primal Home" aesthetic to emerge; an idea that embraces rich earth pigments, imperfection, and the raw beauty of nature. It evolved to include the use of custom wallpapers that play with ambivalent forces. They envelop and comfort, but also expand to some abstract but familiar horizon.

Primal Home is more than just a title, it's a living concept that I’ve been working on in my practice for many years. It invites reconnecting with a modern take on Wabi Sabi. The aesthetic celebrates the passage of time, the authenticity of organic or upcycled materials, and the profound impact of what that does to our nervous system to be around it, like visual medicine. This concept puts value on spaces that are intentionally curated yet flawed, offering a haven of acceptance, and grounding. It’s based on biophillic research that confirms the effects these elements can have not only in public spaces, but in our homes and in our bodies.

The paintings are an homage to the natural world's color palette. These pigments, sourced from soil and even everyday kitchen herbs, offer a rich spectrum that evoke a sense of grit and rootedness inviting the eye to ‘touch.’ Ochres, siennas and umbers create a canvas that speaks to universal elements. The upcycled fibers such as silk from clothing, cotton from upcycled sheets and linen drapes tells a much more intimate narrative scaled down to the individual. The DNA of these materials is a coded blend of energy in our unique AND joined stories.
