Earth Paintings

Instead of illustrating landscape, describing it with a realistic likeness, in this series I am embedding the painting literally with the landscape. Soil and site specific minerals are used to hand-make paint from sites such as Murrieta, California or Sedona, Arizona. I mix the minerals with various mediums to create my own paint palette. My vision is to evoke an emotional landscape that is more nuanced, more internal, more abstract…less literal. I push against the tradition of what landscape painting is to create a deeper challenge to get a sense of place. The DNA of the place is embedded in these works, the land is commemorated with the paint material …and the matter within these ecosystems creates the color.
